December Top Job: Temporary Oncology Pharmacy Technician, Austin, TX

If you’ve ever wanted to work in Austin, Texas, and you have at least three years of experience as an oncology pharmacy technician, check out this temporary pharm tech position in Austin, Texas

You need to have a high school diploma (or its equivalent) as well as at least three to five years of experience in a pharmacy with IV skills (IV certification is preferred). You need to be a certified pharmacy technician for Texas. Passing the Texas State Pharmacy Board examination also is recommended.

Your pay rate is based on experience and starts at about $14/per hour. Your schedule is per diem and your schedule may vary on days from Monday through Saturday.

You will be working under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist where your duties will consist of preparing and distributing medications, performing record keeping and inventory control. 

You will prepare medications either by compounding or admixing medications (always under the supervision of a registered pharmacist). You’ll check to make sure all orders are complete and you will verify patient information as well as check for the proper physician authorization.

You’ll also make sure all orders have insurance approval before preparation. You’ll admix the medications within interoffice and OSHA guidelines.

In addition, you’ll maintain drug information and MSDS sheets. You’ll dispose of all materials when mixing chemo or non-chemo IVs. 

You’ll receive and shelve medications each day, and you’ll help the lead pharm tech in making sure that your pharmacy has adequate supplies of all medications.

You’ll also prepare labels and billing.

Austin can be fairly humid in summer, with temperatures in July averaging 90-plus degrees F (100-plus days of 90-degree temperatures are common in summer). Winter temperatures average 65 degrees as February highs, with February lows averaging in the mid-40s.

Zillow.com reported in November that the average home value in Austin was $229,000, up a bit more than 12 percent compared to November 2012.
