7 Ways to Maximize Your Job Search

What’s the absolute best way to find work? Reach out to your network of friends, family and (former) colleagues. Do so on a huge scale – consider the job search your job.

Read below for seven tips on how to maximize your job search efforts.

  1. As mentioned above, the best way to find a job is by networking with people you know and then reaching out to people they know. The trick to great success is to reach out to this network strategically.
  2. The best time to start is as soon as possible. Don’t worry about having the perfect resume/CV or cover letter ready to do; you’ll undoubtedly end up changing/tweaking them as your search progresses. The main point is to just begin. You’ll improve your tactics and approach as you go along.
  3. Understand that networking is going to take longer than you think it will. People are busy, meetings will be postponed. Just embrace this fact and always be working on your next networking or job opportunity.
  4. Start with friends and colleagues you know well. These are the people that are the easiest to meet with. You’ll want to meet with them to discuss your job and career aspirations, to show them your resume/cover letter, to get information about people they know/job opportunities they’ve heard of.
  5. Now it’s time to actually start approaching employers. Some people believe it’s best to contact the companies at which you really want to work; others think it’s better to approach low-priority employers so that you can better hone your search and interview skills. Going for your top employers first means you’ll have more time to develop contacts there. Decide which approach fits your personality best and…start!
  6. Reach out to contacts on LinkedIn, but don’t expect that you’ll find work without actually asking for a meeting. You can contact them via your first- and second-level contacts, but it’s absolutely best that you ask for a face-to-face meeting (if they’re geographically close to you).
