Renowned landscape Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr. (the son of Frederick Law Olmstead, Sr., the designer of New York City’s Central Park), designed the new, planned community in the early 1900s. Torrance was officially founded in 1912 and incorporated nine years later.

Famed Southern California architect Irving Gill also designed several of Torrance’s first civic buildings, several of which are still used today.

Torrance went through its own boom times after World War II, when aerospace companies moved here, making the city something of a hub for Southern California’s aerospace industry.
